How Shar got here
Nobody plans this. Shar Levine trained for a career she hated, quit it, and in 1987 opened Einstein's the Science Center in Vancouver, a toy, game and book store with a classroom in the back where she taught hands-on science. The store became a kind of Mecca for kids who loved science and weird cool toys, and somewhere in there it won an international store design award from Playthings Magazine.
Then a book rep dragged her boss, a head honcho at a publishing house, into the store. She asked what was good and bad about kids' science books. Shar told her she could do better than most of what was on the market. Apparently bravado works, because she got her first book contract on the spot. The books won awards. More publishers called, and the momentum grew.
Shortly into this trajectory, a friend suggested a writing partner would make everything more fun, and matched her with Leslie Johnstone. Decades and dozens of books later, they are still at it.
